VR-Enabled Education for Schools in Rural Areas

Objective

• This project proposal outlines a plan to develop a model of VR-enabled learning for schools in rural areas, transforming secondary education into an immersive and experiential network with classrooms reconceptualized as virtual knowledge-sharing spaces, Goal 1: to develop and design AR/VR/XR interactive modules of subjects accessible by students using mobile devices, Goal 2: to set up a platform for digital storytelling through which students can learn language subjects in schools, Goal 3: to build a network of students, teachers and industry professionals for virtual interaction with subject experts, Goal 4: to develop web and mobile applications through which students can access their learning materials, Goal 5: to design curriculum-based VR games for each subject

Description

• This IIT Madras initiative develops VR-enabled learning for rural secondary schools across three phases ? Phase 1 building AR/VR/XR teaching modules and digital platforms for interaction with subject experts; Phase 2 designing VR reconstructions of events, curriculum-based games, and science learning models; and Phase 3 establishing virtual peer interaction platforms connecting students globally. By reconceptualizing classrooms as immersive knowledge-sharing networks, the project revolutionizes conventional pedagogy and delivers affordable, experiential quality education to children from rural areas and low-income families.

Impact

• The project is expected to have significant social impact by revolutionizing conventional ICT-enabled pedagogy as a virtual and immersive learning model at national level, leading to a technologically advanced knowledge system opening new avenues for students to broaden knowledge beyond textbooks and experience learning, and improving the quality of education for children from rural areas and low-income families through affordable quality education delivered from their schools
