Fire Safety Training in Hospitals Using Virtual Reality and Haptics
Principal Investigator
Prof. M. Manivannan
Objective
- Develop and implement a Virtual Reality (VR) and Haptics-based Fire Safety Training Simulator for hospital staff to improve their fire safety skills. Train 1,000 hospital staff in high fire-prone hospitals across the state of Tamil Nadu.
Description
- Hospitals are at risk of fire-related hazards due to the presence of combustible materials and the challenge of evacuating immobile patients. To enhance fire safety in hospitals, IIT Madras Touchlab and Merkel Haptics have created a VR and Haptics-based Fire Safety Training Simulator. This simulator offers experiential learning in fire safety skills and utilizes virtual extinguishing materials. It is cost-effective, provides haptic feedback, and incorporates a gamified scoring system. The project aims to develop specific hospital scenes for training and train 1,000 hospital staff in high-risk settings.
