Dynamics of Fake News Propagation and Narrative-Based Mitigation Strategies

Dynamics of fake news propogation

Dynamics of fake news propogation

Principal Investigator

Prof. Sayan Gupta

Co-Investigator

Prof. Ponnurangam Kumaragaru

Objective

  • Phase 1: Understand the dynamics of information spread, particularly fake news, in social networks using agent-based models. This is to identify conditions for fake information going viral and develop real-time tracking measures., Phase 2: Investigate the dynamics of competing news narratives and propose strategies to combat the spread of fake news.

Description

  • This study addresses the pressing issue of fake news on social media, identified by the UN as disruptive to society and requiring urgent attention. It proposes a dynamic approach to detect and limit fake news spread. Phase 1 focuses on understanding fake news propagation dynamics and developing measures for identification. Phase 2 explores competing information dynamics and aims to localise fake news propagation without extreme measures or legal interventions. Phase 2 is planned as a follow-up project.

Impact

  • Phase 1: Global measures for fake news identification based on dynamic propagation signatures rather than content, offering a novel approach independent of existing databases. It also focuses on creating precursor measures for predicting potential viral news early, allowing timely mitigation., Phase 2: Countermeasures by strategically spreading opposing opinions to localise the spread of fake news, eliminating the need for undemocratic measures and preserving public liberty.
