Centre of Excellence on Magnetic Materials
Principal Investigator
Prof. Sarathy
Co-Investigator
Prof. Anbarasu
Objective
- The project aims to establish India's first Centre for Magnet Development at IIT Madras, uniting materials research, advanced manufacturing, and industrial collaboration. The centre will develop, test, and commercialize sustainable magnet technologies.
Description
- Demand for high-performance permanent magnets is rapidly increasing due to electrification (EV motors), renewable energy (wind turbines), and precision electromechanical systems. This project proposes to establish a dedicated multidisciplinary centre at IIT Madras to research, develop, prototype, and scale rare-earth-free (REF) magnet technologies, and to create a pilot production line to demonstrate technology readiness and transfer to Indian industry.
Impact
- Establishment of India's first pilot facility for rare-earth-free magnets and soft magnets., Two magnet chemistries ready for industrial scaling., Demonstration of Rare-earth reduced and Rare-Earth free magnets in electric motor prototypes., Skill and knowledge base creation through training programs and workshops., Technology transfer and IP generation for commercialization.
