Objective

  • Establish the Sustainability Building as a flagship national research and innovation hub at the IIT Madras Thaiyur Campus, providing a shared home for the TLC2 Centre of Excellence and the Energy Consortium while enabling both centres to operate independently, Provide the infrastructure to develop, validate, and demonstrate India's next-generation low-carbon construction and clean energy technologies, Enable real-time Digital Twin modelling of India's power grid, AI-driven forecasting and data-centric energy innovation, prototyping of secure energy hardware, and testing of decentralised and transactive energy markets, Enable pilot-scale beneficiation of construction waste, multi-scale characterisation and durability testing of low-carbon concrete systems, concentrated solar thermal processing of recycled construction materials, and 3D construction printing

Description

  • The proposed sustainability building will provide a shared home for TLC2 CoE & Energy Consortium. TLC2 focuses on low carbon constructions while the energy consortium focuses on clean energy technologies.

Impact

  • Accelerating India's clean energy transition through dedicated infrastructure for real-time grid simulation, hydrogen R&D, battery testing, and AI-driven energy analytics, supporting India's targets of 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030 and 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually, Advancing low-carbon construction with pilot-scale infrastructure for low-carbon concrete systems, solar thermal beneficiation of construction waste, and 3D construction printing, supporting PMAY-U, the National Building Code, and the National Infrastructure Pipeline, Enabling interdisciplinary research on embodied carbon, renewable energy infrastructure, solar-integrated buildings, and life-cycle assessment, Strengthening industry adoption by giving partners across cement, steel, renewable energy, hydrogen, EVs, and grid management a shared platform to co-develop, test, and demonstrate technologies under Indian conditions, Developing researchers and engineers capable of translating innovation into industry, policy, and large-scale infrastructure
