Capacity Building of English Teachers for Teaching Soft Skills in Chennai City Colleges

Objective

• The project is focused on tackling the difficulties encountered by English teachers in imparting soft skills, utilizing a literature-based approach to create an effective teaching model. Furthermore, it seeks to elevate the evaluation methods for assessing soft skills and ultimately elevate the employability skills of students.

Description

• Identification of Challenges: The project initiates by identifying and assessing the specific challenges encountered by English teachers when teaching soft skills in college settings, Data Collection Methods: Data will be collected through a combination of structured questionnaires, personal interviews with teachers, and direct classroom observations to gain insights into the issues faced, Pilot Project Validation: A pilot project will be implemented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed teaching model. This phase will include testing the questionnaire and analysing data using statistical tools like SPSS, Model Development and Evaluation: Based on trends and findings, a comprehensive model for teaching soft skills will be proposed and piloted within a college environment. Subsequent refinements will be made, and the final model will be recommended for potential expansion and adoption by the University of Madras.

Impact

• The new model for teaching soft skills is expected to empower English teachers to deliver the course confidently and effectively. Students will acquire practical soft skills, making them more attractive to employers. Companies recruiting from city colleges will benefit from a pool of well-trained candidates, increasing productivity.
