Bi Stable Wave Energy Conversion along Maharashtra Coast Project at IIT Madras

A novel bi-stable mechanism for wave energy conversion along the Maharashtra coast

A novel bi-stable mechanism for wave energy conversion along the Maharashtra coast

Principal Investigator

Prof. S A Sannasiraj

Objective

  • Showcasing exceptional energy capture performance through deployment in Maharashtra's waters, Acquiring a deeper comprehension and predictability of the system, Demonstrating the substantial power performance potential of this technology, Strategic move towards a greener and more efficient energy landscape for Maharashtra.

Description

  • In the pursuit of efficient ocean wave energy conversion, the challenge of achieving resonance where a wave energy converter's natural frequency aligns with incoming wave frequencies has long persisted, Real sea conditions, characterized by their inherent randomness and rapid fluctuations in wave frequencies, have posed a formidable obstacle to achieving resonance naturally, In response to this challenge, our innovative Wave Energy Converter (WEC) has been developed, featuring a bi-stable arrangement of two springs connected to a floating buoy. This unique arrangement, characterized by two stable equilibrium positions and one unstable equilibrium position, offers dynamic adjustability of the system's natural frequency.

Impact

  • Decrease in carbon emissions, Innovative technology enhances energy capture efficiency, It has the potential to reduce energy costs for consumers and industries, Boosts energy security through localized generation, Enhances the efficiency of the Wave Energy Converter (WEC), Adds diversity to Maharashtra's renewable energy sources.
