Green Hydrogen based renewable microgrid
Principal Investigator
Prof. Guhan
Objective
- To establish a scalable, pilot-scale Green Hydrogen Renewable Microgrid at IIT Madras that converts surplus solar energy into stored hydrogen to provide reliable and zero-emission backup power.
Description
- The global transition toward net-zero emissions has placed Green Hydrogen at the forefront of the renewable energy revolution. Currently, large-scale solar integration faces significant challenges such as solar curtailment. As a premier technological institute, IIT Madras is uniquely positioned to address these gaps. By establishing a hydrogen-based renewable microgrid, this project provides a tangible solution to grid instability and rising peak tariffs.
Impact
- The proposed Renewable Hydrogen Microgrid will deliver measurable benefits across environmental, social, educational, and industrial dimensions. The proposed Renewable Hydrogen Microgrid Demonstration will establish IIT Madras as a living laboratory for clean energy storage. By integrating hydrogen within the campus grid, this project advances practical decarbonisation while creating a scalable model for institutions and industries.
