25 kg per day green hydrogen from biomass containerized demonstrator
Principal Investigator
Prof. S Varunkumar
Objective
- Establishing a 25 kgGH2/day system of 99+% purity and demonstrate at least 100 hrs of operation of the IITM hydrogen from biomass gasification system with gas upgrade using catalytic water-gas-shift (wgs) and hydrogen separation is the principal aim of the project.
Description
- Our technology solution is 'Green Hydrogen through Biomass Gasification'. It simultaneously provides a solution to two problems: (i) current high cost of GH2 and (ii) a value chain for agricultural residues. USD 3.7/kgGH2 is the cheapest as of 2020; this is projected to USD 2/kgGH2 by2030. GH2 from our process costs USD 2.8/kgGH2 today. We are already approaching, in 2025, the projected cost for green hydrogen from renewable electricity in 2030.
Impact
- If successful, this will be a first of its kind biomass to green hydrogen system with the potential to achieve $1/kg green hydrogen at scale. A successful pilot will help us identify, understand and mitigate challenges for large scale commercial deployments.
