Proposal for sustainable freshwater production with integrated cold storage
Principal Investigator
Prof. Advaith
Objective
- To develop and deploy an innovative, solar-powered 1,000-liter compact standalone desalination system for community freshwater access, enhanced by an interactive CO2-based sustainable heating and cooling educational unit to foster awareness of sustainable energy and encourage the adoption of natural refrigerants.
Description
- Proposed Activities and Milestones: Year 1: Recruitment and Design (2026-27). Year 2: Development and Installation (2027-28). Year 3: Analysis and Handover (2028-29). While the outlined yearly funding request of Rs. 4.5 crore will guide the initial allocation, a detailed budget breakdown will be submitted later based on stakeholder consultation.
Impact
- The successful standalone solar compact desalination system will help to produce fresh water from seawater, river water, brackish water, grey water, or any wastewater unsuitable for drinking. This innovation significantly benefits communities facing shortages of clean water (aligning with SDGs 6 and 7). Additionally, creating an educational module focused on a CO2-driven sustainable heating and cooling system will support skill-building while evaluating the potential for continuous desalination operations.
