Waste to Power: Converting Contaminated H2 from Industries into Power
Principal Investigator
Prof. Kothandaraman R
Objective
- To develop on the Proof of concept of converting contaminated hydrogen exhaust from the industries such as Chlor-alkali, steel, and oil refinery into electrical power.
Description
- Some the industries such as Chlor-alkali, steel industries (coke oven gas), nuclear power plants, and Indian oil refineries produce H2 as a 'waste' or by-product (exhaust) along with some impurities like CO, CO2, NH3, and H2S, Because of these impurities and low concentrations of hydrogen, the hydrogen from these industries becomes unsuitable for power production. The proposed indigenously developed fuel cell system could run with impure hydrogen, producing electric power.
Impact
- This project would show a way to reduce global warming and improve the environment by partly substituting electricity from conventional fuels like coal and petroleum with hydrogen.
