Designing Recyclable Plastics
Principal Investigator
Prof. Tarak Patra
Objective
- Recycling plastic minimizes the amount of waste sent to landfills and oceans, promoting sustainable management of resources. It fosters the reuse of materials, decreasing the need for virgin plastic production and conserving raw materials.
Description
- Plastics are made of permanently crosslinked polymers. These crosslinks impart the desired mechanical properties; however, they render plastic unsustainable as it cannot be reprocessed, In contrast, polymer networks that can rearrange their topology without depolymerization, e.g., via the formation of reversible crosslinks (vitrimers), are reprocessable, and hence are promising candidates for a circular economy.
Impact
- Design rules for innovative, sustainable materials to meet regulatory demands, Pathways to improve recyclability of plastics processing, enhancing efficiency, Enable opportunities to adopt recyclable materials that align with sustainability goals.
