Green design approaches to circularity with recycled plastics and natural materials

Principal Investigator

Prof. Susy Varghese

Co-Investigator

Prof. Abhijit Deshpande

Objective

  • The overall objective of this proposal is to bring in circularity in plastic waste management through few selected areas of emphasis with specific deliverables.

Description

  • Indian cities generated about 9.47 million tonnes of plastic waste in 2017. Plastic waste generation is expected to increase to 31.4 million ton by 2031 and further to 55 million tonnes by 2041, Given the challenges faced, technological solutions to be developed require an overall framework of green design to ensure circularity and long-term sustainability. This project will be implemented and deliverables achieved by keeping in mind the principles of green design.

Impact

  • The relevance, importance and need to recycle plastic is more than emphasized, Various approaches using green design strategies for recycling plastic waste using minimum energy usage and replacing plastics with natural materials (partially or fully) are the major strategies proposed in this project.
