Project 'SWEEP': Sanitation Workers Green Skilling through Education & Professionalization
Principal Investigator
Prof. Indumathi Manivannan Nambi
Objective
- Structured training, certification pathways, and defined roles are the need of the hour?not only to improve service delivery, but to elevate the dignity, earnings, and long-term prospects of sanitation workers., It's about creating a future where they are seen as skilled professionals contributing meaningfully to society's health, economy, and sustainability.
Description
- Many of the top-performing panchayats have well-established infrastructure?segregation platforms, composting sheds, waste collection vehicles?and had effectively utilized schemes. However, the reality is that infrastructure and administration, while necessary, are not sufficient by themselves. To ensure long-term success, we must shift from personality-driven and infrastructure-heavy models to resilient, institutionally grounded systems.
Impact
- 500 sanitation workers trained and certified, equipped with industry-recognized certifications., 50% improvement in waste segregation and composting practices in target panchayats, improving local waste management systems., 5,000 trained sanitation workers, improving the waste management ecosystem and creating job-ready workers for corporates and local government bodies., 70% reduction in landfill waste, showcasing improved waste management practices driven by a skilled workforce.
