Recycling & valorization of e-waste plastics
Principal Investigator
Prof. Sreeram Kalpathy
Objective
- The broad, long term vision of the project is to devise a scalable process that would provide energy-efficient, scalable recycling as well as value addition in the form of useful by-products (hydrogen, syngas etc.) for e-waste plastics recycling.
Description
- One of the fastest growing segment of plastics is in e-waste. The current e-waste generation on the planet is estimated to be of the order of 50 million tonnes per annum, of which only 15% is recycled, Currently, to the PI's knowledge, there is no research group at IIT Madras working on e-waste plastics recycling. We could create a center of excellence with our funding partners and become global leaders in this field.
Impact
- Help IIT Madras and the Indian scientific community have a pioneering presence in the plastics recycling field: Through research of this kind performed first at IIT Madras, our country could become a global leader in this field.
