Reducing environmental impact of steel industries by recovering waste heat from molten slag
Principal Investigator
Prof. S. Pushpavanam
Objective
- This proposal seeks to achieve two primary objectives: the design and execution of a lab-scale experiment to validate the concept, and the development of a comprehensive process model for scaling up implementation at the plant level.
Description
- The project aims to develop an innovative approach for the efficient and environmentally friendly management of slag, a by-product of the iron and steel industries. This approach involves the use of a rotating disk to granulate the molten slag, reducing water consumption, energy loss, and environmental pollution associated with traditional methods.
Impact
- This project offers resource conservation by reducing water usage in slag granulation, promotes energy recovery, and lowers environmental impact through reduced water demand, minimized pollutant release, and eliminated heat energy needs for drying. Additionally, dry granulated slag can be applied in construction, providing economic opportunities beyond waste management.
