Development of Fungi-based materials for packaging and insulation solutions

Development of Fungi-based materials for packaging and insulation solutions

Principal Investigator

Prof. Lakshminath Kundanati

Objective

  • The project aims to create a mycelium-based bio composite as a sustainable alternative to Styrofoam packaging in India's growing e-commerce and consumer electronics industries.

Description

  • By targeting a 5% market share, this project aims to reduce EPS consumption by 16,000 tonnes, creating a potential Rs. 240 Crores market opportunity by 2025. This innovative product offers complete customization for various items, full biodegradability in ambient conditions without preprocessing, allowing minimal disposal burden, and utilizes organic waste materials to contribute to upcycling.

Impact

  • This project aims to create a sustainable biocomposite from agricultural waste to replace foam-based packaging materials like EPS. It also focuses on developing a customizable and scalable production process. This initiative promotes environmental sustainability, generates additional income for local farmers, and offers versatile applications beyond packaging.
