An integrative-modular-onsite toilet treatment for NPK fertilizer, carbon and water recovery
Principal Investigator
Prof. Indumathi Manivannan Nambi
Objective
- The project aims to create an integrated toilet treatment system in India, recovering valuable resources like NPK fertiliser, carbon, and water from human waste. This supports the Swachh Bharat mission and societal welfare through a zero-energy, circular sanitation approach.
Description
- Onsite treatment starts by collecting liquid and solid resources with waterless urinals and urine-diverting toilets. Nitrogen, in the form of ammonium liquid, will be extracted from source-separated urine through distillation. Phosphorus will be obtained in the form of struvite using an automated struvite reactor equipped with magnesium dosing pumps.
Impact
- The project's impact includes improved public health, resource efficiency, technological advancement, support for the Swachh Bharat mission, economic opportunities, education, enhanced local agriculture, water conservation, and benefits for Indian communities and the environment.
