Objective

  • Biomass includes agricultural, animal and municipal wastes. Usage of these can be made in several ways. Thermochemical conversion and biochemical conversion are two commonly used methods to convert biomass to energy or useful fuels. In this proposal, an approach combining biochemical and thermochemical processes is envisaged.

Description

  • India has several types of biomasses. Animal wastes such as cow dung and processed agricultural waste such as sugarcane bagasse have higher moisture content. Direct usage of biogas to produce different chemicals is also not easy. Dry agricultural wastes such as rich husk, rice straw, wheat husk, wheat straw and other woody biomasses can be subjected to gasification process to produce syngas.

Impact

  • This process produces syngas of high quality (without nitrogen in the mixture) that can be used to produce useful liquid chemicals such as methanol, etc., through well-known downstream processes such as shift reactor, CO2 separator, etc.
