On-site soil testing for estimation of NPK levels using simple, sensitive and affordable kits
Principal Investigator
Prof. S Pushpavanam
Objective
- Create awareness among farmers and other stakeholders in agriculture about these new kits and ensure their adoption through collaboration with farmers, agricultural universities and colleges as well as government agencies. Create a database of soil health prevalent at present.
Description
- To address issues to improve crop yield, in recent times there has been a move towards precision agriculture and organic farming. Yet, at present, soil testing is a time-consuming and expensive exercise for farmers and hence it is done rarely, if at all. Towards this we have developed kits based on fundamental chemistry which can be used by farmers to determine nutrient levels of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium in soil.
Impact
- The proposal brings a suitable method for shorter testing time as well as optimal capital and testing cost. The method also eliminates the need for the stationary testing facility as the testing followed by analysis and data storage happens remotely using the IoT enabled spectrometry. Overall, the proposal brings up new-age testing methodology, which would showcase our nation's commitment and advancement across the countries.
