Patient specific maxillofacial implants for mucormycosis (black fungus) by 3D printing
Principal Investigator
Prof. Murugaiyan Amirthalingam
Objective
- The project aims to develop automated algorithms for designing patient-specific maxillofacial reconstructive implants from CT/MRI data, explore cost-effective indigenous alloy powders, establish 3D printing parameters, and develop post-printing processes for implants. Metallurgical analysis, testing, standardization, and surface engineering will be conducted. Conventional and plasma electrolytic polishing facilities will be set up. Surgical and post-surgical procedures will be devised, along with rehabilitation and psychological care for mucormycosis patients. The project intends to provide free, high-quality implants to at least one lakh black fungus patients who cannot afford expensive, imported implants, improving their quality of life.
Description
- Develop automated algorithms for patient-specific implant design. Investigate medical-grade titanium and Co-Cr alloy powders. Establish 3D printing parameters for alloys. Develop post-printing processes, including heat treatment and machining. Conduct metallurgical analysis, testing, and standardization. Set up polishing facilities for implant surfaces. Devise surgical and post-surgical procedures. Provide post-surgical rehabilitation and psychological care.
Impact
- By leveraging 3D printing technology, it aims to provide high-quality implants free of cost to economically disadvantaged patients, significantly improving their post-surgical quality of life. This initiative aligns with the national priorities of "Make-in-India" and "AatmaNirbhar Bharat" by promoting indigenous manufacturing of critical medical devices. Additionally, it contributes to the well-being of patients, restores their ability to eat, speak, and communicate, and empowers them to lead normal lives. The project's expected impact on about 60,000 patients reflects its potential to make a substantial difference in society.
