Affordable Assistive Wearable with Audio-to-Visual and Haptic Feedback for Hearing-Impaired Individuals

An affordable assistive device enabling audio-to-visual and haptic feedback for the hearing impaired

An affordable assistive device enabling audio-to-visual and haptic feedback for the hearing impaired

Principal Investigator

Prof. Varun Durai SI

Objective

  • This project aims to develop an affordable assistive wearable device that converts audio signals into visual and haptic feedback, enabling hearing-impaired individuals to accurately perceive sound direction in various environments. The objective is to improve the quality of life for individuals with hearing loss by empowering them to recognize essential sounds and respond effectively, thereby fostering greater independence and inclusion.

Description

  • Develop a wearable assistive device for hearing-impaired individuals., Convert audio inputs into visual cues and haptic feedback., Utilize three microphone inlets to capture indoor and outdoor sounds., Generate specific vibration patterns for sound direction using vibration motors., Incorporate two LED outlets for visual indications., Enhance self-driving capabilities for users., Ensure the device's portability, ease of use, and rechargeability via micro USB.

Impact

  • This project addresses a critical need for affordable assistive technology that benefits the hearing-impaired population. By providing audio-to-visual and haptic feedback, the wearable device offers a novel solution to the challenge of sound direction identification. This innovation has the potential to significantly enhance the daily lives of hearing-impaired individuals by increasing their safety, independence, and ability to interact with their surroundings. It aligns with the goal of creating a more inclusive society, where everyone can participate fully. Moreover, the cost-effectiveness of the device ensures accessibility for a broader population of hearing-impaired individuals, potentially improving the lives of millions in India and beyond.
