Objective

  • The development of Garbhini-GA1 and Garbhini-GA2 represents a crucial advancement that has the potential to transform obstetric care for diverse populations across India., These tools enable more accurate timing of interventions, enhance foetal growth monitoring, and ultimately contribute to lower maternal and infant mortality rates by improving the classification of preterm births and facilitating targeted care.

Description

  • In the broader social context of India's maternal and child healthcare landscape, the continued reliance on Western-derived gestational age (GA) estimation models presents a profound challenge with far-reaching implications., The Hadlock formula, developed for a small Caucasian population in the USA, fundamentally fails to account for India's unique population characteristics, creating a systematic bias that permeates obstetric care across the world's most populous country., The newly developed, India-specific GA formulas, Garbhini-GA1 (Vijayram and Damaraju et al., 2021) and Garbhini-GA2 (Gadekar et al., 2024), have significantly reduced the GA estimation error, achieving an accuracy that is documented to be 12 times better than the Hadlock formula, which is currently the standard of care.

Impact

  • In a year a total of 15,000 pregnant women will be benefit from deployment of these formulas., Armed Forces Hospitals across all sites cater to 24,000 pregnant women every year., Approximately 1.8 crore pregnant women can benefit from deployment of these formulas.
