A light-responsive surgical sealant for rapid dural closure after cranial and spine injury.
Principal Investigator

Objective
- Our aim is to synthesize a natural, light responsive hydrogel sealant effective for providing watertight closure within few seconds when used as a sealant for dural repair during spinal surgery.
Description
- Globally, a staggering 310 million major surgeries are performed each year. As the incidences of cancers, cardiovascular disease, cranial and spine injuries continue to rise, the impact of surgical intervention on public health systems is getting increased constantly., there is an unmet need to produce a new and more effective watertight surgical sealant for sealing the dural openings and preventing CSF leakage., Therefore, our aim is to synthesize a natural, light responsive hydrogel sealant effective for providing watertight closure within few seconds when used as a sealant for dural repair during spinal surgery.
Impact
- This natural hydrogel based sealant includes several key performance attributes: ease of preparation, biocompatible, mechanical strength, and biodegradability.
