Objective

  • Development of a bimanual robotic manipulandum with active force control for post-stroke training and recovery., Development of a real-time progress monitoring system using EEG and EMG during stroke rehabilitation., Development of user-friendly software for operating the robotic manipulandum containing motion-based games for stroke rehabilitation.

Description

  • Brain stroke is the fourth largest cause of death, and the fifth largest cause of disability, affecting millions worldwide. The effects of stroke can be devastating, leading to disability, dependence, and reduced quality of life (QoL)., According to the Indian Stroke Association, the incidence of stroke has increased by 100% in the past few decades., We propose the development of a robotic upper limb rehabilitation system for the motor rehabilitation of stroke survivors. Under the "Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan" initiative, we aim to establish a stable supply chain for raw materials, production, and distribution of device components within India to make stroke rehabilitation more accessible to patients.

Impact

  • With domestic manufacturing of medical devices and technologies being key goals, these initiatives can address challenges posed by the availability of affordable rehabilitation., Moreover, this is aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations (SDG3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages and SDG10: Reduce inequality within and among countries).
