Concept Note: Longitudinal citizen-driven monitoring of construction & demolition waste using IITM Mobile App
Principal Investigator
Prof. Nikhil Bugalia
Objective
- We propose to develop a high-quality, India-contextual Virtual Reality (VR) safety orientation module that simulates common site hazards, safe work practices, and emergency responses.
Description
- Safety on Indian construction sites is a critical challenge, exacerbated by the fact that roughly 56 million workers in the sector are unskilled and lack essential hazard awareness. We propose to develop a high-quality, India-contextual Virtual Reality (VR) safety orientation module that simulates common site hazards, safe work practices, and emergency responses. The VR content will be optimized for affordable, widely available headsets to maximize accessibility across small and large sites. IIT Madras-affiliated startups will lead compressed 3D interactive model development to ensure realistic, low-bandwidth experiences suitable for field deployment.
Impact
- Deliverables include validated VR training content, evaluation results, deployment toolkits, and a pathway for large-scale adoption to improve construction safety outcomes nationwide.
