Concept Note: Valorization of mixed construction and demolition waste for sustainable highway granular subbase layers
Principal Investigator
Prof. Surender Singh
Objective
- This project, proposes to develop a performance-based framework that identifies the dominant factors governing breakage behavior and links them to GSB performance, including impurity content, compaction equipment, and compaction energy, thereby enabling the safe and reliable use of mixed recycled C&D waste in subbase applications.
Description
- Although the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways permits the use of recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) in highway granular subbase (GSB) layers, their practical adoption remains limited due to material heterogeneity and the high susceptibility of particles to breakage. This project, therefore, proposes to develop a performance-based framework that identifies the dominant factors governing breakage behavior and links them to GSB performance, including impurity content, compaction equipment, and compaction energy, thereby enabling the safe and reliable use of mixed recycled C&D waste in subbase applications.
Impact
- The proposed work promotes large-scale valorization of C&D waste, reduces dependence on natural aggregates, and minimizes landfill disposal., The project enhances resource efficiency, lowers environmental impact, and supports resilient infrastructure development in alignment with Sustainable Development Goals 9
