Objective

  • This program aims to restore Bengaluru city's depleting groundwater levels by adopting nature-based, decentralized solutions, with a target of constructing 10,000 low-cost recharge wells.

Description

  • Many cities in India have undergone rapid urban expansion over the past few decades. The city's water needs have risen steeply with rising population, booming industries, and increasing infrastructure demands., Though many of these cities historically depended on surface water sources like rivers, reservoirs and tanks, sourcing has shifted significantly to groundwater to meet domestic, industrial, and commercial water requirements., In response to this, government and non-governmental agencies have stepped up artificial recharge measures. One such major initiative undertaken by United Way Bengaluru is "One Billion Drops (OBD)" project, as part of its mission to enhance the effectiveness of groundwater recharge efforts.

Impact

  • AquaMAP is looking forward for a close association with any agency which is involved with managed aquifer recharge in urban areas., Several Faculty, associated with AquaMAP have expertise in groundwater management, and are well known nationally and internationally. They can provide technical advice on: (i) optimal locations for recharge wells based on the site conditions; (ii) design of recharge wells and (iii) scientific assessment of impact of recharge wells.
