Principal Investigator
Prof. Ligy Philip
Objective
- This project promotes: (i) protection of water sources and environment; (ii) conservation through recycling and (iii) improving the hygiene in the villages and thus risk reduction in public health in villages.
Description
- Thanks to implementation of prestigious Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), there has been significant improvement of availability of water to households in almost all villages in India., However, this greywater and effluent from overflowing septic tanks is not managed appropriately. There is a critical need for appropriate management of greywater and septic tank effluent in rural areas.
Impact
- This system has already been implemented in 14 villages in Tamil Nadu and one village (Muthur) in Karnataka through CSR funds from Industry such as India Additives Limited; Chennai Petrochemical Corporation Limited and IBM., The rural wastewater management project in Muthur was a huge success as it was also co-purposed as a park for meeting place of elderly and children in the village., Based on our model, Karnataka Government has already started implementing this project in 500 villages and are planning to implement in another 500 villages during this financial year.
