SmartSan: Technologies for smart management of sanitation assets
Principal Investigator
Prof. Prabhu Rajagopal
Objective
- We aim to create and implement 33 SmartLids across septic tanks, sewer manholes, and STP Tanks, and 1 HomoSEP cleaning robot dedicated to desludging, suction, storage, and transportation of tanks and manholes.
Description
- The sanitation industry remains an area where the adoption of technology for enhancing efficiency, productivity, and saving lives is lagging. Despite legislative attempts, India still has a sizable number of manual scavengers, and data indicates that more than 340 people died in sewers and septic tanks between 2016 and 2020. Our research group at the Center for Nondestructive Evaluation (CNDE) at IIT Madras has developed solutions addressing these challenges over the last few years, particularly through the HomoSEP series of robots for homogenizing and cleaning Septic Tanks.
Impact
- Usage of HomoSEP solutions eliminates the need for manual scavenging and ensures 100% safety., HomoSEP generates significant job opportunities for sanitation workers by harnessing robotic solutions., By adopting a secure procedure for processing sludge from cleaning tanks to Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), there will be no leftover waste or sludge on streets or in vacant areas.
