Advancing Precision Cardiology. Engineering the Future of Heart Care.
A CSR initiative by NTPC in partnership with IIT Madras
About the Initiative
Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of mortality in India, demanding innovative, interdisciplinary solutions. With the support of NTPC, IIT Madras is establishing the NTPC Centre of Excellence in Cardiovascular Research to bring together engineering, medicine, computational science, and genomics for the development of next-generation diagnostics, therapies, medical devices, and precision healthcare solutions. The Centre comprises two major research facilities—Cardiovascular Mechanics & Engineering and Cardiac Cellular Physiology—supported through a ₹35.41 crore CSR grant, of which ₹25.27 crore has been received.
Why It Matters
Cardiovascular disease continues to place an enormous burden on India's healthcare system. The Centre addresses this challenge by combining advanced engineering, artificial intelligence, genomics, and clinical research to improve early diagnosis, personalize treatment, develop indigenous medical technologies, and accelerate the translation of laboratory discoveries into patient care.
Research Focus Areas
Engineering Better Cardiac Care
- Patient-specific digital twin models for personalized treatment planning
- AI-powered ECG reconstruction and computational electrophysiology
- Virtual reality platforms for surgical planning
- Indigenous development of next-generation cardiac assist devices (LVADs)
Precision Medicine & Genomics
- Identification of genetic and molecular biomarkers for heart disease
- Spatial and single-cell genomics in heart failure
- Cardiac immunology and inflammatory profiling
