Building India's Digital Future: IIT Madras and Vertiv Join Hands to Empower the Next Generation

India's digital revolution is unfolding faster than ever before, from cloud computing to artificial intelligence, every byte of innovation relies on one thing: strong and reliable digital infrastructure. But while the technology is advancing, the need for skilled professionals who can manage, maintain, and innovate within this ecosystem is growing even faster.
Recognizing this critical gap, IIT Madras, in collaboration withVertiv, a global leader in critical digital infrastructure, and theIIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation, has launched a one-of-a-kind initiative to create a future-ready digital workforcefor India.
Announced on October 6, 2025, this partnership goes beyond training; it's a CSR-driven mission to strengthen India's data center ecosystemand build sustainable skill pipelines that can power the nation's digital transformation.
A CSR Collaboration with Purpose
At its heart, this initiative is a powerful example of how CSR and academia can come together to make a tangible impact. Vertiv, known globally for its expertise in powering and protecting digital infrastructure, is extending its commitment to India by supporting STEM education and digital skills development through this collaboration with IIT Madras.
The goal? To nurture the next generation of professionals capable of managing the data centers that keep our digital world running.
Empowering 2,000+ STEM Students Nationwide
Under the program, over 2,000 students from science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) backgrounds will undergo a 35-hour self-paced online course on Data Center Operations and Maintenance (O&M).
But that's just the beginning. From this pool, a select 160 outstanding students will be invited to the IIT Madras campus for afive-day immersive training program. Here, they'll gain first-hand experience in data center technologies, from power and thermal management systems to remote monitoring and predictive maintenance.
On completion, participants will earn the Certified Intelligent Data Centre - Operations & Maintenance (CIDC-O&M) certification from IIT Madras, a highly regarded credential in the world of AI-driven, data-powered infrastructure management.
Bridging the Gap Between Education and Employability
India's digital economy is booming, but so is the demand for skilled professionals who can keep it running seamlessly. This is where the IIT Madras-Vertiv collaboration steps in.
By combining academic excellence with industry expertise, the program ensures that students gain not just theoretical understanding but alsopractical, hands-on skills that make them immediately employable in real-world data center operations.
Every module is designed to align with the evolving needs of India's critical digital infrastructure, ensuring participants are job-ready the moment they step into the industry.
Industry Voices on Shaping the Future Workforce
“At Vertiv, we recognize the importance of strengthening India's talent pipeline in tandem with the nation's continued digital transformation,” said Subhasis Majumdar, Managing Director, Vertiv India.
“By partnering with institutions like IIT Madras and IITM Pravartak, we aim to equip the next generation of engineers and technicians with practical knowledge of data center technologies — the foundation of today's digital economy.”
Adding to this, Prof. Ashwin Mahalingam, Dean (Alumni and Corporate Relations), IIT Madras, noted:
“By training students in the highly specialized area of data center operations and predictive maintenance, we are helping them gain cutting-edge skills while contributing to India's broader digital transformation journey.”
And from Dr. M.J. Shankar Raman, CEO of IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation: “With the growth of AI and data centers, careers around data infrastructure are poised for exponential growth. This partnership ensures that our students become a future-ready workforce capable of managing the digital backbone of tomorrow's India.”
A National Mission in Motion
The program is being implemented through IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation, a Section 8 company supported by theDepartment of Science and Technology (DST) under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS).
This collaboration represents the perfect alignment of industry, academia, and government efforts, all working toward one vision: enabling India's youth to become the backbone of the global digital infrastructure ecosystem.
Building Impact Through CSR and Education
What makes this initiative stand out is its emphasis on CSR with measurable impact. It's not just about training students, it's about creating an entire ecosystem of innovation, employability, and nation-building.
By investing in young minds and creating opportunities for hands-on, high-demand skill development, Vertiv and IIT Madras are not only bridging the skills gap but also redefining what effective corporate social responsibility looks like in the digital era.
